Lino Block Vase Print

I have always wanted to take a lino block and put into clay and create a 3D vase or pot. This I have managed to finally complete after my better half enrolled myself on to a 5 session pottery course at Mona Pottery in Claremount Farm, Wirral.( http://www.monceramics.co.uk/) Thanks to Lorna, I created a 3D version of one of my reductive lino blocks in clay and coloured with overlays of glazes, then rubbing and scraping to build the colour. In all it was experiment that I had to try and see how it came out. Paul the true potter seemed a bit sceptical at this, but certainly helped and advised as it took shape. One of the first questions was , would it fit in the kiln? Luckily clay shrinks so we had a little to spare after taking the top of the pot. Another question and concern was if the colour would be dark enough and come close to the original print? After originally working on the colour and applying the glaze, I still had my doubts and booked myself in to another session to add more colour and shadows to bring more contrast to each side of the pot and enhance the texture of the embossed features created by the lino block.

Well after applying the final touches and applying the bisque, I left it for Paul to fire in the Kiln. The final result is here for you to enjoy. As with all pots and firing you do have a few issues , mine was a slight crack down one corner, for which I have made good with Milliput and watercolur which blend really well.

From the whole experience I would say it was a voyage that I hope to take again, with another block and build another 3D lino!
